Hi, my name is Selinia and I am an aspiring art teacher. I have a BA in Studio Art from Cal State Long Beach and am currently in the Single Subject Credential Program. I do a variety of arts, ranging from digital illustrations to bookmaking, which is my current obsession. I always love learning and trying different types and style of art, whether it be digital or traditional, or something completely random and different.
Some random (fun) facts about me:
I LOVE owls, apparent in my website name (the OWL life). Ravens and crows are a VERY close second
I did Link Crew in High school which helped freshmen though their first year of high school by teaching life lessons and connecting with the students through fun activities and events. I was in the program for 3 years and commissioner for 2.
I love creating stories, especially ones with an interesting or dark twist.
My life long dream is to one day retire and open a tiny craft/souvenir/workshop shop in a small village near the mountains in some Nordic country. One can only dream....

Teaching Philosophy
As a future art educator, my goal is to not only educate and inform students about art, but to create an environment for them to explore the possibilities of what art is. By guiding students to use their interests and strengths, students will be able to express themselves however they chose. I believe in the progressive philosophical notion that a teacher is a facilitator of learning. I aim to provide and gently guide my students towards what they want to do.
Learning is not only about the outcome, but the journey and process of getting there. The idea of the journey being as important as the destination has resonated with me since high school. As a commissioner of a leadership program aimed at helping freshmen, we put on many events to help and connect with them. While the events were satisfying to see, the steps getting there was the most important part. The coordinator was only there to facilitate and authorize any big plans. As a group, we had to plan and organize everything ourselves. If there were any problems or obstacles, we had to figure out a solution. One thing that really stuck out to me as a leader was that people looked to me for guidance, even if it wasn’t my department. I plan to use those leadership skills I learn to lead my classroom. As a future teacher, I want students to know that they can trust me and look to me for help .
I also aim to help my students broaden their horizons. By demonstrating a range of arts disciplines and mediums, I want my students to always try new things and to gain a better understanding of the art world. With a range of skills under their belts, I hope that my students can use my teachings and apply it to other aspects of their lives. I believe that I am not only an art teacher, but an educator that prepares my students for the real world. Experiencing a bit of everything prepares my students to not only try something new, but to open their minds and adapt to new situations. Whether it be group work or individual work, traditional or modern art, 2D or 3D art, or new mediums, my goal is for my students to problem solve, create art, and to enjoy themselves.
